The Lotto: Unveiling the Rules, Wheels, and True Chances of Winning
The Lotto is one of the oldest numerical games deeply rooted in Italian culture, capable of igniting dreams and hopes with every draw. But beyond its historical charm and tradition, how does this game truly work? What are its rules and, above all, what are the real probabilities of winning? In this article, we will analyze the Lotto in every aspect, from its basics to the specifics of its most common bets, providing a clear and honest guide for anyone wishing to understand its mechanics.
🎲 The Foundations of the Game: Numbers and Wheels

The Lotto is based on the drawing of five numbers from 1 to 90 for each of the 11 wheels present in the game. The wheels are as follows: Bari, Cagliari, Firenze, Genova, Milano, Napoli, Palermo, Roma, Torino, Venezia, and the Ruota Nazionale (National Wheel). It is important to note that the Ruota Nazionale, while having the same standing as the others, was introduced more recently. Each draw is independent of the others, both between different wheels and between past and future draws.
To play, you choose a minimum of 1 to a maximum of 10 numbers on the slip, indicating on which wheel or wheels you intend to bet, or by choosing the "Tutte" (All) option which includes all wheels except the Ruota Nazionale (or even the latter if specifically selected).
🎯 The Lotto's 'Sorti': From Simple Ambata to Terno

The "sorti" (wagers) are the different types of winning combinations in Lotto, determined by the quantity of numbers you guess and the bet placed. Each sorte has its rules and, as we will see, its distinct probabilities.
The main sorti are:
- Ambata (or Estratto Semplice): you guess only one number out of the five drawn on a wheel.
- Ambo: you guess two numbers out of the five drawn on a wheel.
- Terno: you guess three numbers out of the five drawn on a wheel.
- Quaterna: you guess four numbers out of the five drawn on a wheel.
- Cinquina: you guess all five numbers drawn on a wheel.
In addition to these, there is also the Estratto Determinato, where you must guess a number and its exact position (for example, the first drawn, the second drawn, etc.). However, it is a less common bet with very different probabilities, so we will focus on the most popular wagers.
It is also possible to play combinations of sorti, for example, betting on "Ambo and Terno" simultaneously. In such a case, the prize amount will be proportionally distributed between the two wagers based on the stake.
⚖ Real Probabilities: Unmasking Chance
Here we get to the heart of the matter: the probabilities of winning. It is essential to understand them to have a realistic idea of your chances, without illusions. Probabilities are calculated using combinatorics, specifically combinations without repetition, given that the order of the drawn numbers does not matter and a number cannot be drawn multiple times.
Consider the drawing of 5 numbers from 90. The total number of ways in which 5 numbers can be drawn from 90 is given by the binomial coefficient :
This number represents all possible combinations of 5 numbers that can be drawn on a single wheel.
Now let's analyze the probabilities for different wagers, assuming you play a single number or a combination of numbers on a single wheel.
📊 Probability of Ambata (Single Number Drawn)
If you play only 1 number, the probability that it will be drawn among the 5 is given by the ratio between the ways that number can be drawn and the total ways 5 numbers can be drawn.
More simply, there are 5 positions in which our number can appear, and 89 remaining numbers for the other 4 positions. The probability is:
So, you have approximately 1 chance in 18 of guessing a single drawn number.
🤝 Probability of Ambo (Pair)
To hit an Ambo (pair), you must guess 2 numbers on a wheel. Assuming you have played 2 numbers, the probability is:
Playing 2 numbers, the probability of hitting an Ambo is approximately 1 in 400.
🥉 Probability of Terno (Triplet)
For the Terno (triplet), you must guess 3 numbers on a wheel. If you play 3 numbers, the probability is:
Playing 3 numbers, the probability of hitting a Terno is approximately 1 in 11,748.
🍀 Probability of Quaterna
For the Quaterna, you must guess 4 numbers on a wheel. Playing 4 numbers:
The probability of hitting a Quaterna is approximately 1 in 511,038.
⭐ Probability of Cinquina
The Cinquina, the maximum prize, requires guessing all 5 numbers drawn on a wheel. Playing 5 numbers:
The probability of hitting a Cinquina is approximately 1 in 43,949,268.
These calculations are valid for a single bet on a single wheel. If you play more numbers, or on more wheels, the probabilities change, but it is important to note that these probabilities reflect the mathematical reality of the game.
⚠ What to Remember: Honesty and Responsibility
It is essential to understand that Lotto, like any game of chance, is designed to generate profit for the operator. This means that the prize amounts paid out are always less than the total proceeds from the bets. In mathematical terms, the expected value of each bet is negative by definition. This is not a moral judgment, but an essential statistical observation.
There are no "winning systems" or "lucky numbers." Each draw is an independent event, and numbers drawn in the past in no way influence those that will be drawn in the future. The probability of a number being drawn is always the same for every number and every draw.
